Torqeedo Adopts Hydrogen Cells (Zero Emissions) for Navigation

by xBJ1R439wX

Torqeedo and Proton Motor Fuel Cell GmbH, two worlds that meet for a common goal. The idea being developed by this collaboration is to integrate the charging of hydrogen fuel cells for the propulsion systems that Torqeedo uses in its electric boats.

Together the two companies designed a marine hydrogen hybrid construction kit with innovative features to integrate Deep Blue battery electric systems with Proton Motor’s advanced technology. Let’s take a closer look.

More speed and range with the hydrogen-electric hybrid system

The project, which has received funding from the Bavarian federal government for the period 2021 to 2024, will provide a practical and cost-effective solution for:

  • Quick replenishment
  • Increase speed and range
  • Meet the most restrictive emission requirements on environmentally sensitive waterways or in urban areas

As explained by Jochen Czabke , Senior Vice President Product Development and Global Service for Torqeedo GmbH, the Deep Blue Hybrid system provides a propulsion range from 50 to 200 kW. Furthermore, the cells will have a range between 30 and 120 kW and will ensure flexible hydrogen storage.

We should recall that the Deep Blue Hybrid is the first fully integrated system presented on the market that combines a hybrid propulsion system with the entire on-board energy management. In this way, it is possible to sail without any engine noise, in total relax, ensuring the use of energies which protect the environment and favor greater independence.

“We look forward to delivering a zero-emission hybrid-electric propulsion system that will improve the range and performance of our battery-powered engines without the use of fossil fuels,” said Czabke.

The prototype will be tested at Torqeedo‘s engineering center near Munich, to proceed with the updated delivery of another tool in the Deep Blue toolkit.
